In a thrilling showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Morris Knolls Golden Eagles etched their names into the history books by winning their second consecutive Morris County tournament title. The 10-9 victory over Morris Catholic on May 8 at Landing Park in Roxbury marks the first time the program has ever repeated as county champions—a milestone that this senior class can proudly call their own.
This group of seniors has already accomplished so much: three sectional titles, two appearances in the group finals, and last year's county championship. But this repeat? That's something no other Morris Knolls class has achieved. "County tournaments are special," head coach Keith Heinemann said. "They're more intimate than state tournaments. You're playing your neighbors. Those are some of the best teams we will see all season long, and it gives us the confidence with states coming up."
The game was a true back-and-forth battle, with Morris Knolls jumping out to an early lead. Julia Fox and Kaylee Rolph each drove in two runs in the first inning, with Rolph smashing a two-run triple to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 advantage. Fox added another RBI in the second inning, pushing the lead to 5-0. "It has been a huge rush of adrenaline," Fox said. "Everything that we have done for the last 24 hours and, honestly, this entire season has led to this moment."
But Morris Catholic wasn't about to go down without a fight. In the top of the third, the Crusaders loaded the bases on an error, a hit batter, and a single. Gia Bonsignore cracked a base hit that scored two runs, putting Morris Catholic on the board. With the bases still loaded and nobody out, Morris Knolls made a pitching change to try and stem the tide.
The game remained tight through the middle innings, with both teams trading punches. But it was freshman Kendall Rady who delivered the decisive blow. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Rady lifted a sacrifice fly to score Fox and seal the 10-9 victory. "I just knew I had to come in big and strong and couldn't doubt myself in this moment," Rady said. "I just really wanted to do it for the seniors. They deserve this, and we had this opportunity."
For a team that has already achieved so much, this repeat county title is the perfect springboard into the state tournament. And for the seniors, it's a fitting capstone to a remarkable run—one that will be remembered in Morris Knolls softball history for years to come.
