When Libby Boyko dreams of scoring a goal, she's not just thinking about the play—she's imagining the song that would follow. Her pick? "Love Shack" by the B-52's, a blast of 1980s pop perfection. But as a senior defender for the Randolph girls lacrosse team, Boyko knows her chances of finding the back of the net are slim. "Realistically, I'm never going to score," she admits with a laugh. "I don't really go to goal. ... But I do want to score this year. I want to at least try."

That dream is fueled by a growing tradition in Morris County lacrosse: personalized goal songs. Randolph is one of several local teams that let players choose a track to blast over the stadium speakers when they score at home games. For junior Annabella Sharkey, who wears No. 21, it's a heavily censored version of "Rich Flex" by Drake and 21 Savage—a nod to her jersey number in the chorus. (It's the same song used by Temple University sophomore Cathleen Moran when she played for Morristown.) Teammates, however, have suggested a different tune for Sharkey: the theme from "Jaws," playing off her last name.

The goal songs are just one piece of a larger pregame ritual that fires up players before they take the field. Most teams curate warm-up playlists, whether in the locker room, on the bus to away games, or during drills. For the Randolph girls, junior midfielder Riley Minerley takes the lead on song selection, while Boyko provides the speaker—and whoever has Spotify Premium handles the ad-free stream. It's a small but meaningful way to build energy and camaraderie before the first whistle.

At West Morris, the pregame vibe reaches another level thanks to Melvin Travis. A pastor at River of Life Church in Long Valley for 25 years, Travis has worked as the school's site manager since 2017, handling event setup, announcing, and the scoreboard. But four years ago, he added DJ to his list of roles when the Wolfpack field hockey team asked him to play "Shipping Up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys before games. Now, Travis brings his unique style to lacrosse games too, blending his pastoral presence with a knack for reading the room and cranking up the energy when it matters most.

Whether it's a defender chasing that elusive first goal or a DJ-pastor setting the tone from the booth, these musical traditions are proving that in Morris County lacrosse, the soundtrack is just as important as the scoreboard.
