The Moorhead-to-Minnesota pipeline is flowing strong, and the Golden Gophers just added another key piece. Cornerback Zak Walker has become the fourth Spud from this recruiting cycle to verbally commit to the University of Minnesota, joining running back Taye Reich, wide receiver David Mack, and quarterback Jett Feeney.
"After a great visit and talk with my family, I have decided to commit to the University of Minnesota. The people, culture, and player development make it a place I am proud to call home. Row the Boat!" Walker shared on social media.
Walker is a developmental prospect with a high ceiling—don’t expect him to make an immediate splash on the field. He’ll need to add strength and sharpen his pass coverage technique before seeing significant playing time. But what makes him a scholarship-worthy talent is his standout speed and explosiveness. As one of the top track athletes in the state of Minnesota, Walker has the wheels to go stride for stride with opposing teams’ best receivers.
His ball skills are a dual threat, too. Walker has proven he can make plays on both sides of the ball, showing versatility as a cornerback and wide receiver. If he can continue to refine his route-mirroring and hip-turning on shorter routes, he has the potential to excel in press man coverage. Keep an eye on this Spud—he’s got the tools to grow into a key player for the Gophers.
