The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially welcomed back superstar shortstop Mookie Betts, activating him from the injured list just in time for a crucial three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. To make room on the roster, the team has optioned infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Betts has been sidelined since early April, when he exited a game against the Washington Nationals during the Dodgers' third series of the season. His recovery has been on track, and after a productive rehab assignment with the Triple-A Comets, the Dodgers were confident he'd be ready for the series opener. Before the injury, Betts was starting to find his rhythm at the plate following a slow March. In his last full game on April 3, he went 2-for-6 and hit his first home run of the season in a dominant Dodgers victory.
So far this year, Betts holds a .179/.281/.429 slash line with a .710 OPS. He'll bat second in the lineup for the series opener, giving the Dodgers a much-needed boost as they look to reignite their offense.
The decision to option Freeland wasn't easy. The young infielder has held his own this season, providing solid defense at second base and even outperforming teammate Santiago Espinal offensively. However, with the Dodgers boasting deep infield depth, Freeland was the odd man out. Through 33 games, he has two home runs and eight RBIs, posting a .646 OPS in 98 at-bats. Moving forward, the Dodgers plan to use Miguel Rojas and Hyeseong Kim in a platoon at second base.
For Freeland, this demotion isn't all bad. Regular playing time in Triple-A will allow him to build consistency and make a stronger case for a permanent spot in the big league lineup. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are eager to snap out of their recent struggles—they've slipped into a tie for first place in the NL West with the San Diego Padres. Betts' return could be just the spark they need to regain control of the division.
