Big changes are coming to Michigan high school sports. The Catholic High School League (CHSL) is adding another powerhouse to its roster, and this time, it's Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (SMCC) making the move.
Starting in the 2027-28 school year, SMCC will become the CHSL's 35th member, leaving the Huron League after decades of competition. The announcement came Wednesday, May 13, and it's already generating buzz among athletes, coaches, and fans alike.
"SMCC's membership in the CHSL was long overdue," said league director Mike Evoy. "Their faith-based success both in the classroom and in athletics makes them a natural fit."
For SMCC, a longtime member of the Detroit Archdiocese, the timing feels right. The CHSL has been expanding rapidly, stretching into Ohio and as far west as Jackson, with schools like Lumen Christi joining the fold. The league's flexible competition levels—tailored to individual sports—also align perfectly with SMCC's values.
But let's be real: travel is the elephant in the room. Monroe sits a bit south of the league's core, so road games will be longer. However, SMCC athletic director Jared Janssen has crunched the numbers, and the trade-off might actually work in the school's favor.
"We ran some travel analysis," Janssen explained. "It opened up more local non-league opportunities with teams we've played in the Huron League for years. We plan to play most of them still. So now, our non-league games are going to be a little bit closer compared to what they've been in the past, with farther travel for league games. It balances out really well."
This move marks SMCC's first new sports league affiliation since 1968, when it joined the Huron League. (For context, the school itself formed in 1986 through a merger.) It's a historic shift for a program steeped in tradition, and it comes during a busy period for the CHSL, which also welcomed Birmingham Detroit Country Day this year while saying goodbye to Macomb Lutheran North.
For fans of high school sports—and for anyone who loves a good underdog story or a fresh rivalry—this is one to watch. Grab your gear, mark your calendars, and get ready for a new chapter in Michigan athletics.
