Nick Coberley delivers big hits that lift Bedford baseball team pulls out nine-inning victory over Monroe.

Monday's high school baseball action in the Monroe County Region delivered plenty of drama, led by a Bedford senior who turned his struggles into heroics.

Nick Coberley entered the 2024 season determined to improve on a .200 batting average from last year. The hard work paid off in spectacular fashion against Monroe. With his team trailing in the seventh inning, Coberley launched a two-run home run to tie the game. He wasn't done yet—in the ninth inning, he singled home the winning run to seal a 7-6 victory.

"It was kind of unexpected," Bedford coach Craig Trychel said. "He really struggled hitting last year. We worked on his swing and he's doing really well. He had a real long swing last year. Now, it's nice and short."

Coberley finished with three hits and has raised his average to .341 this spring. His first home run of the season couldn't have come at a better time. "He hit it and it just carried," Trychel added. "At first I didn't think it was going to be a home run."

Teammate Brody Leonhard also delivered a clutch performance, collecting three hits including a double in the seventh that sparked the winning rally. Chase Atkins added two hits as the Mules improved to 10-5. Despite walking 11 batters, hitting five, and committing three errors, Bedford found a way to win.

"We've played good baseball at times, and other times we've struggled and made errors," Trychel said. "Today, we only gave up three hits. You don't have many games when you walk 11, hit five batters, make three errors and win. It was crazy, but the guys were resilient. They battled. We went down 6-2 and were down three in the top of the seventh."

For Monroe, Carson Liedel hit a two-run homer and Asher Simmons doubled in a losing effort.

In other Monday action, Flat Rock jumped out to an early lead thanks to Braylen Crump's three-run double in the first inning, powering the Rams to a 9-4 win over Milan. Flat Rock scored six times in the opening frame. Crump, Alex Barron, and Alex Beaudrie each collected two hits to support pitcher Jayden Yancy. Milan's Scottie Brewer drove in two runs.

Jefferson's Jonathan Leffew was dominant on the mound, tossing a two-hit shutout as the Bears blanked Riverview 11-0. Bret Gennoe, Grady Brooks, and Hunter Barton led the offense with two hits apiece.

Drake Ferris also contributed to the day's highlights for Ai.
