The Monroe County Region delivered an unforgettable week of high school sports action on May 14-15, with athletes shining bright at the Division 2 Track Regional held in Chelsea. From record-breaking performances to clutch comebacks, the region's talent was on full display.
On the boys' side, Orion Galloway of Jefferson stole the spotlight in the 800 meters, clocking a season-best 1:59.29 to take first place. Not to be outdone, Flat Rock's Jacob Stanislawski dominated the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:36.78, while also securing a second-place finish in the 1,600. New Boston Huron's Cameron Crane soared to victory in the pole vault, clearing an impressive 12-8. Airport's Anthony Tamrahkyarov showed his versatility, placing second in the 200 meters, third in the 100 meters, and anchoring the second-place 400 relay team alongside Jay'len Strong, Damien Luft, and Mason Stoneburner. Other standout performances included second-place finishes from Milan's Braeden Letette in the high hurdles, Dundee's Luke Bishop, and Braxton Ellison in the long jump. Jefferson's Zane Knezevich punched his ticket to the state championships in both the 200 meters and as part of the 800 relay, while the 400 relay team—comprising Grant Hakeos, Alex Brown, Zy'Rell Henley, Drake Jones, Maddex Shotwell, and Josh Hargreaves—also secured their spot at state.
The girls' competition was equally thrilling. Ella Baker of Airport blazed to victory in the 800 meters with a season-best 2:23.43, while Milan's 1,600 relay team—Amerie Wilson, Madison Lancaster, Kaily McDaniel, and Angelina Wilson—captured a regional title with a time of 4:13.93. Flat Rock's Breanna Sexton was a force in the field events, taking second in the shot put and third in the discus. Other notable seconds came from Dundee's Maddie Salenbien in the 400 meters, Jefferson's Clair Miller in the 3,200, and Lily Ratliff of Dundee in the long jump. Flat Rock also saw Elise Lovett (long jump) and Aileen McNamara (800 meters) qualify for the state championships, adding to the region's impressive haul.
In softball, St. Mary Catholic Central's Hayley Southerland delivered a performance for the ages. After the Kestrels fell behind early, Southerland sparked a dramatic 6-4 comeback win over Clinton with a two-run triple in the fourth inning and a two-run double in the fifth. In the first game, she crushed a three-run homer to power a 12-1 victory, helping SMCC sweep the No. 5 team in Division 3. Olivia Piepsney was a dual threat, earning a pitching win in game one with 12 strikeouts and then launching two home runs while driving in six runs in the second game. Hannah Williams chipped in with a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly, supporting Braelyn Runyon's solid pitching effort.
From track triumphs to softball heroics, the Monroe County Region proved once again why it's a powerhouse in high school sports. Whether you're celebrating these athletes' achievements or gearing up for your own season, gear up in style with apparel that matches their winning spirit.
