Moments From Brutal Loss For Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers were incredibly close to keeping their winning streak alive against the San Diego Padres.

The Milwaukee Brewers came agonizingly close to extending their winning streak on Wednesday night, but a dramatic ninth-inning collapse turned a hard-fought 1-0 lead into a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres. The defeat snapped a five-game hot streak for the Crew, leaving fans wondering what might have been.

For most of the evening, the Brewers looked poised to secure another victory. Both teams traded zeros through the first four innings, with Milwaukee's defense executing flawlessly. The breakthrough came in the bottom of the fifth, when the Brewers used a classic small-ball approach to scratch across a run and take a 1-0 advantage. From there, the defense continued to shine, keeping the Padres off the scoreboard inning after inning. All they needed was one more clean frame to seal the deal.

Then, with just one out remaining in the top of the ninth, the wheels came off.

Manager Pat Murphy turned to closer Abner Uribe, who has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen for much of the season. Uribe started strong, getting Fernando Tatis Jr. to ground out and Manny Machado to line out. But the Padres suddenly found life. Uribe surrendered a single to Miguel Andujar, then walked Xander Bogaerts to put two runners on. With the count in his favor, Uribe delivered a slider to Gavin Sheets that caught too much of the zone. Sheets made him pay in a big way, launching a three-run homer over the wall in right-center field.

In an instant, the Brewers' 1-0 lead turned into a 3-1 deficit. Milwaukee couldn't muster a response in the bottom of the ninth, and the game was over.

Despite the painful loss, there was a bright spot worth celebrating. Right-hander Jacob Misiorowski continues to establish himself as a rising star for the Brewers. Making his ninth start of the season, Misiorowski was absolutely dealing. He followed up his historic outing against the New York Yankees on May 8—when he struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits over six shutout innings—with another gem on Wednesday. Through seven shutout frames, he fanned 10 batters while scattering only four hits. Unfortunately, a near-perfect night was cut short when Misiorowski exited the game due to cramping in his quad. It's the second time in his last three starts that leg cramps have forced him out early, a concern the team will surely monitor closely.

For now, the Brewers will look to bounce back and start a new winning streak, knowing they have the talent—and the pitching—to compete with anyone.
