The Boston Red Sox are starting to heat up, and one MLB writer believes the team is already on the right track to make a postseason push. After completing their first sweep of the 2026 season on Wednesday, the Red Sox welcomed back veteran starter Sonny Gray from the injured list—a much-needed boost for a pitching staff that's been battling injuries.
Entering Thursday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston sits at 16-21. While that record might not turn heads, the Red Sox are just 1.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for the final American League wild-card spot. And with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal recently sidelined by injury, the door is wide open for Boston to make a move.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller isn't counting the Red Sox out. In fact, he sees the team's recent surge as a sign that things are clicking into place. "In the woebegone American League, the Red Sox are just 1.5 games back from a wild card spot, and seem to have already turned a corner," Miller wrote. He pointed to key improvements in the lineup, noting that young stars Caleb Durbin and Marcelo Mayer have shaken off their early-season struggles. After hitting just .181 during Boston's rough 9-17 start, the duo is batting .283 over the last 10 games.
Jarren Duran, despite battling some tough luck at the plate, has found his power stroke with three home runs in his past five games. And then there's the unexpected spark from rookie Payton Tolle, whose mustache—and the "unspeakable power" it apparently brings—has energized the pitching staff, Miller joked.
It's early, but the Red Sox are showing signs of life. With a four-game series against the Rays kicking off Thursday at 7:10 p.m. ET, Boston has a prime opportunity to keep climbing the standings. For fans still holding out hope, the message is clear: the corner might already be turned.
