Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has baseball fans scratching their heads—and laughing—after revealing his latest slump-busting strategy: showering in full uniform.
The 29-year-old backstop, affectionately known as "Big Dumper" by fans, was mired in a brutal 0-for-38 hitting drought that would test any player's patience. Desperate for a turnaround, Raleigh turned to an unlikely source for advice: teammate Logan Gilbert.
"Logan gave me some good advice to wash off the bad mojo or juju from the baseball gods," Raleigh told reporters after the Mariners' 10-2 victory over the Houston Astros on May 12. "So yeah, it worked. He was right, so I got to give him credit where credit's due."
Following his Monday, May 11 game, Raleigh hit the showers still wearing his cleats, pants, and jersey—hoping to literally wash away the bad luck. The bizarre ritual apparently paid off. The very next day, Raleigh snapped out of his slump with two singles and a walk, helping Seattle cruise to a decisive win.
Teammates couldn't help but celebrate the strange turnaround. "It might have been a good call," pitcher Bryan Woo said. "And who knows, maybe that's the difference."
For context, Raleigh is no stranger to making headlines. He's coming off a record-breaking season where he smashed 60 home runs, setting the MLB single-season record for a catcher. So when a player of his caliber tries something unconventional, the baseball world takes notice.
Whether it's the power of superstition or just a good story, Raleigh's uniform shower is a reminder that in baseball, players will try just about anything to break out of a slump. And sometimes, a little clean mojo is all you need.
