The San Francisco Giants are currently one of the highest-spending teams in Major League Baseball, yet they find themselves well below the .500 mark as late May approaches. This has naturally sparked trade rumors suggesting the club might sell off key pieces this summer. However, recent insider reports indicate the picture may not be as drastic as initially thought.
Just last week, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Giants "would love to unload" stars like Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Jung Hoo Lee. But MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided has pushed back on that narrative. According to Murray, the Giants' front office remains "optimistic" that all four players will bounce back from their early-season struggles.
And the numbers seem to support that optimism. Devers, in particular, has shown promising signs of turning things around at the plate. Entering May games, he posted a sizzling 1.078 OPS for the month, including three home runs. Adames, the team's only reliable shortstop option for the foreseeable future, has also heated up, slashing .333/.344/.367 over his last 30 at-bats while driving in five runs.
That doesn't mean the Giants are completely opposed to being sellers at the trade deadline. It's certainly an option for the front office, but a full-scale teardown—especially of players that team president Buster Posey recently signed to long-term deals—seems unlikely. Instead, San Francisco would likely take a more measured approach, similar to other teams in their position.
The most probable trade candidates would be pending free agents. Starting pitchers Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle, along with second baseman Luis Arraez, could all be made available. With pitching and infield depth always in demand around the league, the Giants should have no shortage of suitors if they decide to move any of these three. For now, though, the focus remains on getting the current roster back on track.
