MLB and the MLBPA began their negotiations with a lockout looming at the end of the season.

The clock is ticking on Major League Baseball's labor peace. On Tuesday, May 12, MLB and the MLB Players' Association sat down for their first official collective bargaining meeting in New York, with a potential lockout looming at season's end. Sources familiar with the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the session marked the opening presentations of each side's positions.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, and the stakes are high. This could be an even more contentious battle than the 2021-22 lockout, which lasted 99 days and delayed the start of that season. Owners are expected to push for a salary cap—a concept that has long been a non-starter for players. Frustration is growing among smaller-market clubs, who claim they can't compete with the massive spending of teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers (back-to-back World Series champions) and the New York Mets.

Meanwhile, the union is navigating a leadership transition. Former MLBPA boss Tony Clark stepped down in February amid a scandal, with Bruce Meyer—the union's longtime lead negotiator—taking over on an interim basis. Meyer now faces the challenge of uniting players against what could be a hardline stance from ownership.

Baseball fans know the history: the 2021-22 lockout was the first work stoppage since the devastating 1994-95 strike, which canceled the World Series. With the Dec. 1 deadline approaching, every meeting matters. Whether we see another spring training delay or a smoother path to a new deal remains to be seen—but for now, the game's future is on the table.
