Red Sox fans dreaming of a blockbuster trade for Mike Trout might want to temper their expectations. While a recent report from local radio host Michael Felger suggested that a source told him not to be surprised if Boston lands the superstar outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels, a prominent MLB insider is throwing cold water on that idea.
Jon Heyman of Bleacher Report said Wednesday that there's only about a 5% chance the Angels trade Trout before the August 3 deadline. Heyman believes Angels owner Arte Moreno is deeply attached to the three-time MVP and would prefer to see him finish his career in Anaheim. He also questions whether the 34-year-old would even waive his no-trade clause.
"I am pretty doubtful that he'd go, so that's why I'm gonna put a low number on it," Heyman said. "I wouldn't rule it out."
Even if Trout were to consider a move, Boston might not be the top destination. Heyman noted that Trout, who grew up in southern New Jersey, could be more inclined to accept a trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Red Sox also have a crowded outfield, making a potential fit less obvious.
Still, Boston's offense has struggled to generate consistent power in 2026, and Trout's early-season resurgence—11 home runs with a .914 OPS in 43 games—certainly catches the eye. That renaissance could give the Angels a window to move an oft-injured veteran who is owed roughly $37.1 million annually through 2030.
But Trout's age and injury history present a massive risk for any team, and moving him would be a tough blow to a struggling Angels organization. For now, Red Sox fans should probably keep their expectations in check.
