These two MLB Network analysts have been blown away by Pittsburgh's fast start.

Few teams are playing better baseball right now than the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the national analysts are taking notice. As we move through the early weeks of the 2026 season, the Bucs have emerged as one of the most compelling stories in the league.

Entering play Tuesday, Pittsburgh boasts a stellar 10-6 record, a commanding plus-19 run differential, and the second-best winning percentage in all of baseball. This isn't a fluke built on one strength; they've excelled on both sides of the ball, ranking seventh in runs per game and an impressive fifth in team ERA.

While optimism was high in the Steel City after an aggressive offseason, the speed of this success has turned heads. On MLB Network's "MLB Central," former World Series MVP Mike Lowell named the Pirates his most surprising team of the young season. "I think the pitching, we thought it was going to be good, but I didn't think the offense was gonna look that good," Lowell stated. "The Pirates brought in a lot of pieces. It seems like it's gelling, and we're in Week 2."

The numbers back up the hype. Bolstered by Oneil Cruz's electrifying start and key additions like Ryan O'Hearn and Brandon Lowe, the lineup is a balanced force. It ranks seventh in runs, ninth in homers, and seventh in OPS, blending power, speed, youth, and veteran presence. "I like their lineup a lot," Lowell added. "There's lefties, there's righties, there's talent, there's speed, there's youth, there's veterans, I like it."

After a minor 1-3 stumble out of the gate, the Pirates have found their rhythm, winning nine of their last twelve games. Fellow analyst Mark DeRosa concurred with Lowell's assessment, also tabbing Pittsburgh as the season's biggest surprise so far. It's a fast start that has the baseball world watching and has Pittsburgh fans dreaming big as the team establishes itself as a legitimate force in the National League.
