The Mitchell High School girls golf team served notice with a strong opening statement, securing a third-place finish at the Harrisburg Invitational held at Spring Creek Country Club. In a competitive 13-team field, the Kernels showcased their depth with three golfers landing in the top ten individually.
Leading the charge were Mia Larson and Maddie Childs, who both carded solid rounds of 6-over-par 77 to tie for fifth place. They were closely followed by teammate Anna Eliason, whose score of 78 was good for eighth. Brynlee Sabers rounded out the team scoring with a 90, contributing to Mitchell's total of 322.
The team title was claimed by a formidable Aberdeen Central squad, who posted an impressive 304. O'Gorman took second with a 321, just one stroke ahead of the Kernels, highlighting how tight the competition was at the top.
On the individual leaderboard, Aberdeen Central's Olivia Braun, the defending state champion and a future South Dakota State University golfer, was in a class of her own. She fired a brilliant 6-under-par 65 to earn medalist honors, a round that included eight birdies.
With the season now underway, the Kernels look to build on this promising start. Their next challenge comes quickly at the Huron Quadrangular on Tuesday, April 23rd, where they will face Aberdeen Central and Watertown once more.
