Missouri Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy is in stable condition following a shooting incident at a concert in Mississippi early Sunday morning, the university's football program confirmed Monday. The star athlete underwent surgery for a gunshot wound, and while the team has not yet provided a timeline for his return to football activities, reports from ESPN indicate he is alert and moving around as of Monday morning.

"Ahmad is deeply loved by his teammates, coaches, friends, family and fans," the team said in a statement. "We will continue to stand beside him and his family through this difficult time, offering our love, prayers, strength and support."

Hardy, a native of Oma, Mississippi, first made a name for himself at Louisiana-Monroe, where as a freshman he rushed 257 times for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns. After transferring to Missouri last season, he exploded onto the national scene, carrying the ball 256 times for 1,649 yards—second among all FBS players—and 16 touchdowns. His breakout campaign earned him first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press and a spot as a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, given to college football's top running back.
