Sometimes, all it takes is one dominant arm to set the tone for an entire game. That was exactly the case for the Columbus Clippers, thanks to a masterful performance from Rorik Maltrud. The right-hander delivered seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight batters. His season ERA has now dropped to an impressive 2.08, making him the clear ace of the Clippers' rotation. While he's a bit older than the typical prospect making waves at Triple-A, there's no denying he's been the team's most reliable starter all year.
On the offensive side, the Clippers didn't light up the scoreboard, but a few players stood out. George Valera and Nolan Jones each collected two hits in five at-bats, while Stuart Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a booming double and a pair of walks. Kody Huff also made his presence felt, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double, continuing what has been a solid season at the plate.
Down in Double-A, Ralphy Velazquez is making a strong case for a promotion. He went 1-for-3 with two walks last night, raising his season line to .297 with an .893 OPS. In my opinion, it's only a matter of time before he gets the call to Triple-A. Jacob Cozart chipped in with a 2-for-4 night that included an RBI double, while Nick Mitchell went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI double of his own.
It's been a tough season for Dylan Delucia, but today was a bright spot. He tossed four scoreless innings, striking out six and walking just one. His ERA still sits at 8.41, but outings like this show the potential is there. Carter Rustad also delivered two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two without issuing a walk. His ERA now sits at a microscopic 1.10, making him one of the most effective relievers in the system.
As for the Lake County Captains, it was a rough night. It feels like Great Lakes (the Dodgers' affiliate) has had their number for years. Jogly Garcia, who entered the season with some buzz, struggled again, allowing six runs in just 4.1 innings, pushing his ERA to 7.25. The Captains managed only three hits, two of which came from Ryan Cesarini, including a home run.
The Howlers were the only affiliate to pick up a win, and it was all about the pitching. Nelson Keljo allowed two runs over three innings, but the bullpen locked things down from there, surrendering just one run over the final six frames while striking out nine.
Finally, keep an eye on Robert Arias. He went 0-for-1 but drew three walks, showcasing the plate discipline that has helped him hit .323 with a .933 OPS. Meanwhile, Anthony Martinez also contributed at the plate, continuing to impress in a lineup full of young talent.
