It was a quiet day at the ballpark for the Columbus Clippers, as their matchup against St. Paul was postponed—giving fans a rain check on what promised to be an exciting game.
Down in Akron, Nick Mitchell turned heads as an on-base machine, going 1-for-2 with three walks and two stolen bases. Surprisingly, he didn't score any of the RubberDucks' three runs, but his ability to get on base kept the pressure on the defense all night.
Ralphy Velazquez (1-for-3, walk) and Guy Lipscomb (1-for-3, walk) also contributed, while Alex Mooney and Conor Barstad each laced doubles to add some extra-base pop to the lineup.
On the mound, Justin Campbell continues to impress early in his season. The right-hander tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out three and walking three. Through 21.2 innings this season, Campbell now boasts a 1.66 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts—numbers that suggest he's ready for bigger challenges.
Carter Rustad followed Campbell with 2.1 scoreless frames of his own, lowering his season ERA to a microscopic 0.89 across 20.1 innings. Magnus Ellerts and Jack Jasiak each allowed a run in their outings, but Jack Carey picked up the easiest win of his career by striking out the only batter he faced.
Over in Lake County, Esteban Gonzalez provided most of the offense, crushing a two-run home run to keep the Captains in the game. Jeffrey Mercedes went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base, showing off his speed on the basepaths.
Starting pitcher Braylon Doughty had a mixed outing, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings. Cam Walty struggled in relief, surrendering five runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss.
Cannon Peebles had a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with a home run, while Dauri Fernandez matched him with a 1-for-3 day that included a homer and a walk. Robert Arias continued his consistent play, going 2-for-4 with a double, and catcher Victor Izturis added a 1-for-2 day with a walk.
It was a tougher day for starting pitcher Joey Oakie, who allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 3.1 innings, taking the loss and seeing his season ERA climb.
