Minnesota Vikings News and Links: What Position Needs An Upgrade Next?

The Minnesota Vikings made a bold move this offseason by signing wide receiver Jalen Jennings, and fans have every reason to be excited. After relying heavily on Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison last season, the team needed a reliable third option in the passing game. Jennings proved during his time with the San Francisco 49ers that he can step up as a true No. 1 target when called upon. His physical style and sure hands should give quarterback J.J. McCarthy a dependable weapon across the middle of the field.

Now, let's talk about the details of that contract. Expect the Vikings to structure Jennings' deal with some cap-friendly flexibility. It wouldn't be surprising to see void years added to spread out the cap hit, and many of his incentives might be classified as "Not Likely to Be Earned" (NLTBE) based on his 2025 stats. For example, Jennings recorded 55 receptions, 643 yards, and 9 touchdowns last season. Incentives tied to hitting 60-plus catches, 750-plus yards, or 10-plus touchdowns would likely fall into that NLTBE category, meaning they wouldn't count against the 2026 cap unless he reaches them—and then they'd roll over to 2027.

While the receiver room looks stronger, the Vikings still have work to do on defense. Adding a veteran edge rusher should be a top priority to complement the young talent up front. The secondary also needs attention. Bringing back Fabian Moreau makes sense after his solid play last season, but the team could take a flier on Marshon Lattimore in hopes of extending him in 2027. That move would create some competition for snaps but could pay off big if Lattimore regains his Pro Bowl form.

Of course, the ultimate cherry on top would be seeing Harrison Smith return for one more season. If the future Hall of Famer decides to hang up his cleats, the Vikings might look to free agents like Taylor Rapp, Jabrill Peppers, or Ifeatu Melifonwu to fill the safety void. Whatever direction they go, the front office has shown it's not afraid to make moves.

Looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft, the Vikings have the 18th overall pick, and early comparisons are already drawing excitement. First-round target Caleb Banks has drawn comparisons to Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis. At 6'6" and 340 pounds, Davis has been a consistent force since being drafted 13th overall in 2022, earning PFF grades above 70 in all four of his seasons and setting career highs in sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss last year. While some scouts see glimpses of Chiefs superstar Chris Jones in Banks' tape, a more realistic—and still excellent—outcome would be a player of Davis' caliber anchoring the interior line for years to come.
