The pinnacle of individual achievement in men's college hockey has a new name. Max Plante, the dynamic sophomore forward for the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, has been crowned the winner of the 2026 Hobey Baker Award.

Plante's remarkable season, where he notched 25 goals and 52 points in 40 games, saw him edge out stiff competition from fellow finalists T.J. Hughes of Michigan and Eric Pohlkamp of Denver. His point total placed him third in the nation, showcasing his elite offensive production on a national stage.

This victory is a landmark moment for the Bulldogs program. Plante becomes the first UMD player to claim the prestigious award since Scott Perunovich in 2020, and only the seventh in school history. The win also adds a new chapter to a remarkable family legacy, as his father, former NHL forward Derek Plante, was a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker during his own tenure at Minnesota Duluth back in 1993.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, Plante's award-winning season is a powerful testament to his development and skill. It's the kind of performance that defines a player's journey and cements their place in college hockey lore, reminding us all of the dedication and talent required to reach the very top.
