As the high school sports season heats up, this week's Minky Couture star athletes are making headlines with standout performances that have their teams eyeing championship glory. From the diamond to the soccer pitch, these young athletes are proving why they're the ones to watch.
Kanab junior Walker Baird is doing it all for the Cowboys this season. On the mound, he's been nearly unhittable with an 8-1 record, 86 strikeouts, and opponents batting just .151 against him. At the plate, he's swinging a hot bat, hitting .379 with seven doubles, 25 hits, 19 RBIs, and a .528 on-base percentage. His coach, Craig Brinkerhoff, praises his relentless work ethic: "What makes Walker Baird a key member of our team is his leadership on and off the field. Walker is always working on how he can be better on the mound and also in the box. Walker is always locked in anytime he steps foot on the field." The No. 2 seed Cowboys are set to face No. 3 seed Gunnison Valley this Thursday at BYU in the state tournament.
Over in softball, Taylorsville senior Aleya Wegner is leading the Warriors' charge in the Region 4 championship race. She's been a dual threat all season, hitting .426 at the plate and racking up 115 strikeouts in the circle. Wegner recently surpassed 450 career strikeouts, a testament to her dominance. Her coach, Kjera Miranda, highlights her impact: "Aleya has been a force on the mound and an amazing teammate. She shut down two strong 6A teams this season." One of her standout moments came against 6A powerhouse Herriman, where she struck out six in a key victory. Wegner has signed to play college softball at USU Eastern.
On the soccer field, Davis senior Cooper Harward has seamlessly transitioned from outside back to an attacking role, and the results have been electric. He leads the Darts with 12 goals and nine assists, showcasing his versatility and creativity. Coach Dillon Richens describes him as a game-changer: "Cooper is a special player who balances technical ability and creativity with exceptional athleticism and work rate. He is a natural leader who consistently elevates those around him. His love for the game and competitive nature have significantly raised the bar for our entire team." Davis finished the regular season with an impressive 14-2 record and a perfect 8-0 mark in region play.
