Steelers rookie mini-camp kicked off this weekend, and while most teams brought in a handful of quarterbacks to evaluate, Pittsburgh took a different approach—they rolled with just one: third-round pick Drew Allar. And according to head coach Mike McCarthy, that was no accident.
McCarthy revealed that the plan was to put Allar under the microscope from the very start, testing his poise and stamina in a high-pressure setting. The rookie didn't just survive the challenge; he thrived. "We pushed him," McCarthy told reporters after the session. "To go 35 snaps in a team drill, that's pushing it, but he handled it. If your quarterback can't handle it, then you don't get to go to the speed and the tempo and the pre-snap that we were able to go. I thought Drew did a hell of a job."
That kind of praise from a seasoned coach like McCarthy speaks volumes, especially for a young signal-caller still finding his footing in the NFL. Allar now enters a quarterback room that includes Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph—though Rudolph is reportedly available in trade talks this offseason. The biggest wild card remains Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to make a definitive decision on returning for a second season with the franchise. Discussions have been ongoing, but no resolution is in sight.
For Allar, this mini-camp performance is an early step in what promises to be a competitive battle for the starting job. And if McCarthy's words are any indication, the rookie is already making a strong impression.
