Two of South Dakota's brightest young stars have been crowned champions of the week by their fans. Brandon Valley track standout Mikah Peters and Jefferson softball ace Tya Devericks have been voted the Argus Leader Athletes of the Week for the period of April 27 to May 2.
On the boys' side, Peters dominated the voting with an impressive 54.47% of the reader ballots. And it's easy to see why. The distance runner put on a show at the Dakota Relays, crossing the finish line first in three events: the 1,600-meter run, the 3,200-meter run, and the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay. His performance in the 1,600 was a personal best, while the relay leg was not only a season best but now ranks as the 21st-fastest time in the entire nation.
Over in the girls' bracket, Jefferson's Tya Devericks was a landslide winner, capturing a commanding 70.15% of the vote. The junior sensation was a force of nature all week, dominating both in the pitcher's circle and at the plate. Over three games, she tossed 15 innings of brilliant softball, allowing just two runs on 11 hits and a single walk while fanning 15 batters. When she wasn't dealing on the mound, Devericks was raking at the dish, going 7-for-11 with two doubles, two triples, five RBIs, and a run scored. That's the kind of all-around performance that wins games—and fan votes.
