In a season that's quickly becoming one for the record books, Brandon Valley senior Mikah Peters is proving he's a force to be reckoned with on the track. This past weekend at the prestigious Howard Wood Dakota Relays, Peters didn't just compete—he dominated, sweeping three events and cementing his status as one of South Dakota's elite distance runners.
Peters claimed victory in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races, setting a personal best in the former. As if that wasn't enough, he also anchored the Lynx to a win in the 1,600 meter sprint medley relay. "Coming into today, I really wanted to make a statement," Peters said. "Sweeping all three events is a way to do that, and I think it's pretty special."
This breakout performance is the culmination of years of hard work and a shift in mindset. After finishing second in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600 at last year's state meet, Peters has surged into his own this senior season—a campaign that also included a state cross country title. "It's all mindset," he explained. "Running's got to be 80-85% mental. Once you really figure that out, you're going to bring yourself places. This last year was me really trying to find myself."
Brandon Valley head coach Tony Thoreson has watched Peters' transformation up close and couldn't be prouder. "Micah does everything right. He does the workouts, he does the rest, he's eating correctly. It all adds up, and he does it all to a tee. It's been a lot of fun coaching him," Thoreson said.
But Peters' impact goes beyond his own results. His leadership is helping shape the next generation of Lynx runners. "I've got a bunch of young boys mentored by Micah," Thoreson added. "They've done so much over the last two years running with him. It's amazing to see how quickly their times are coming down and how confident they are in their racing. It's been great to have him show those younger guys the ropes."
For fans of distance running, the best is yet to come. Peters will continue his career at Iowa State University next year, where he'll look to build on this incredible senior season. Whether you're a runner yourself or just love a good underdog story, Mikah Peters is definitely a name to watch—and maybe even a reason to lace up your own spikes.
