Khamzat Chimaev is hinting that his time at middleweight might be coming to an end—regardless of the outcome at UFC 328. The undefeated star (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) faces Sean Strickland (30-7 MMA, 17-7 UFC) in Saturday's main event at Prudential Center in Newark, and he's already looking ahead to a potential move up in weight.
When asked Tuesday if this could be his final fight at 185 pounds, Chimaev responded with a knowing smile and a simple "I hope so." He added, "I like to eat pizza. We will see," suggesting the grueling middleweight cut may no longer be worth the sacrifice.
The timing is interesting. Light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg recently tore his ACL during his title-winning performance against Jiri Prochazka at UFC 327 in April, leaving the division in flux. The promotion hasn't announced plans for an interim title, but Chimaev's name is already being floated as a potential contender.
For now, though, Chimaev is keeping his focus squarely on Strickland. "I hope (Ulberg) gets a fast recovery," Chimaev said. "But I'm not focused on what's beyond Strickland. He's a tough fighter, a good fighter. I just go in, beat this guy, and then we move on to whatever's next."
With his undefeated record and growing star power, Chimaev's next chapter—whether at light heavyweight or beyond—promises to be just as compelling as his rise through the middleweight ranks. For fight fans, Saturday's bout might be the last chance to see "Borz" at 185 pounds.
