Michigan football is building for the future, and they just landed a major piece from their own backyard. Four-star offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey, a standout from Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, has officially committed to the Wolverines.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, Lipsey is ranked as the third-best recruit in the state of Michigan according to the 247Sports Composite. His commitment on Saturday brings Michigan's 2027 recruiting class to six pledges—and half of those are in-state talents. Joining Lipsey are four-star edge rusher Recarder Kitchen (Muskegon), ranked No. 4 in the state, and offensive lineman Louis Esposito (Saline), who checks in at No. 16.

This is a significant early victory for first-year offensive line coach Jim Harding, who understands the value of keeping local stars close to home. While Harding spent much of his career coaching out west—including a stint at Utah under head coach Kyle Whittingham starting in 2014—he has deep Michigan roots. A Maumee, Ohio native and former standout offensive lineman at Toledo, Harding also coached at Troy Athens from 2005 to 2008, serving as head coach in his final season.

Harding recently told The Detroit News that locking down in-state talent is a top priority. "If it was in a perfect world, you'd like to build the offensive line room from inside out, meaning trying to get the top offensive linemen from the state," he said. "I think that promotes pride and interest from fans around the state. Having seen the kids play in high school and having coached in the state of Michigan, I know there's really good high school football here, and so we're doing things like this to try to network and get the high school coaches comfortable with a brand new staff."

For Michigan fans, this commitment is a clear sign that the Wolverines are serious about building a foundation of homegrown talent—and Lipsey is exactly the kind of player to anchor that vision.
