Michigan football is making serious waves on the recruiting trail, and the Wolverines just landed a major piece for their future. On Saturday, May 9, four-star edge rusher Jayce Brewer officially announced his commitment to the Maize and Blue during a press conference in Indianapolis. With four hats on the table—Indiana, Tennessee, and Purdue among the finalists—Brewer ultimately chose the block 'M,' sending the crowd into a roar of approval.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Brewer hails from Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis. According to 247Sports composite rankings, he's the No. 8 player in Indiana, the No. 28 edge rusher in the nation, and the No. 342 overall prospect in the Class of 2027. Those are impressive numbers for a player who's still early in his development.

247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins has high praise for Brewer's potential, describing him as a "thick edge player that can slip blocks and create negative plays." Ivins notes that Brewer is "young for the grade and is likely to undergo a major physical transformation in the coming years," adding that he's "rather fluid in the lower half and can quickly change course" and has a knack for "finding ways to split double teams." While Brewer "showcases good bend," Ivins points out that he "needs to improve overall rush package in hopes of generating more quarterback pressures." Still, the scouting report projects Brewer as a multi-year contributor at a Power Four school—a promising outlook for Michigan fans.

Brewer's recruitment has been a whirlwind. He made two recent trips to Ann Arbor—one in March and another for the spring game in April—and has an official visit scheduled for June 19. He's the second edge rusher in Michigan's 2027 class, joining Muskegon standout Recarder Kitchen, and notably, Brewer is the first recruit to commit directly to the Wolverines' new defensive line coaches, Larry Black and Lewis Powell.

This commitment marks the second pledge for Michigan this month, following Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix) offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey. With Brewer on board, the Wolverines now have seven commits in the 2027 class, which is currently ranked No. 30 in the nation. For a program looking to build depth and talent for the future, this is a strong step forward—and a sign that the recruiting momentum is only picking up.
