Michigan basketball just added another marquee matchup to its 2026-27 schedule—and this one takes place under the bright lights of basketball's most famous arena. The Wolverines are set to face Duke at Madison Square Garden in New York on Monday, Dec. 21, marking the second straight season these two powerhouse programs will meet on a neutral court.
Last year, the Blue Devils edged out Michigan 68-63 at Capital One Arena in Washington, one of only three losses the Wolverines suffered all season. That game was a preview of what many hoped would be an NCAA Tournament rematch between two of the three title favorites, alongside Arizona. Instead, Duke suffered a stunning collapse against UConn, giving up a 19-point lead and falling on a 30-foot buzzer-beater by Braylon Mullins. Michigan, meanwhile, went on to win the national championship, defeating UConn 69-63 in the title game.
This latest showdown is part of a reported three-game package Duke has with Amazon, which also includes a rematch against UConn in Las Vegas on Nov. 25 and a matchup with Gonzaga on Feb. 20 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. For Michigan, it's the third known game on the 2026-27 schedule, joining a home-and-home series with Marquette and a return trip to Villanova after the Wildcats visited Ann Arbor last December.
Both teams are expected to be among the nation's elite again. Duke returns key players like Caleb Foster, Patrick Ngongba II, Dame Sarr, and Cayden Boozer, and adds former Wisconsin standout John Blackwell—a Michigan native and Brother Rice alum. Michigan has reloaded through the transfer portal, bringing in Moustapha Thiam, J.P. Estrella, and Jalen Reed.
With two storied programs, a neutral-site classic at Madison Square Garden, and national title aspirations on both sides, this December clash is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games of the season. Mark your calendars—and your brackets.
