Tom Michael is trading the Panthers for the Fighting Illini—and it feels like a homecoming.
On Tuesday, Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman announced that Michael, a former Illini men's basketball standout, will return to the University of Illinois as deputy director of athletics. After 12 years as athletic director at Eastern Illinois, Michael is heading back to Champaign, where he'll serve as the second-highest ranking administrative officer in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. His role will span campus, Big Ten, and NCAA governance—a big job for a guy who knows the Orange and Blue from the inside out.
Michael starts May 14, stepping into the role left vacant when Roger Denny departed for Oklahoma in January. It's a pivotal hire for Illinois, which has been building momentum under Whitman's leadership.
So what will Michael actually do? According to the UI announcement, he'll help shape competitive strategy for the athletics program, work closely with sport programs and student-athlete support services, and oversee football, men's and women's track and field, and cross country on a daily basis. He'll also manage facilities, capital projects, and the business office. In other words, he'll have his hands in just about everything.
At 55, Michael brings serious credentials. He was the longest-serving athletic director in the Ohio Valley Conference, and during his tenure, Eastern Illinois claimed 24 conference titles—12 of those in the last four years alone. After winning five OVC championships in 2022-23, the Panthers followed up with four more in 2023-24, earning the OVC Commissioners Cup. That's the kind of winning culture Illinois hopes he'll help replicate.
"Tom has established himself as an experienced, respected leader in Division I," Whitman said. "As a former men's basketball standout, Tom's passion for the Orange and Blue is unquestioned, and I know he will bring great pride to such an important position. Tom and I have known each other for more than 20 years, and I look forward to working closely with him to continue our program's upward trajectory."
Michael's resume includes service on the President's Council at EIU, the FCS Football Oversight Committee, and the FCS Playoff Selection Committee from 2021-24. But for Illinois fans, his deep ties to the university are what make this hire special.
"There is so much positive momentum right now at Illinois," Michael said. "As an alum, there is a tremendous amount of pride in the success that is being achieved across the board. And as a professional, I am honored to be able to return to Champaign and work alongside the best teams, coaches and staff you will find in college athletics."
Before his decade-plus at Eastern Illinois, Michael spent 18 years at Illinois in various roles, climbing from associate athletic director in 2008 to senior associate athletic director in 2012. He was a four-year letterwinner and three-time team captain for the Illini men's basketball team—a player who truly bled orange and blue.
Now he's coming home to help write the next chapter.
