Michael O'Neill has decided to step away from Blackburn Rovers to fully commit to his role as Northern Ireland manager, the club has confirmed.

The 56-year-old took over the Championship side in February on a temporary basis following the departure of Valérien Ismaël, with Rovers languishing in the relegation zone. Despite the challenging circumstances, O'Neill—who had been juggling both roles—managed to steady the ship at Ewood Park.

Under his guidance, Blackburn climbed to a 20th-place finish, securing safety by five points. His tenure included 15 matches in charge, with an even record of five wins, five draws, and five losses—a respectable turnaround given the team's precarious position when he arrived.

In a heartfelt message to supporters, O'Neill acknowledged the club's rich history and passionate fanbase. "Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition," he said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff, and everyone around the club."

"After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the Owners, Board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club."

For fans of the beautiful game, O'Neill's decision underscores the intense demands of modern football management—a reminder that even the most dedicated leaders must sometimes choose between multiple passions. As Northern Ireland sets its sights on Euro qualification, Blackburn now begins its search for a permanent manager to build on the foundation O'Neill helped restore.
