Manchester United's interim manager Michael Carrick couldn't hide his admiration for his makeshift defensive duo after a gritty 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. With first-choice centre-backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez suspended, Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui stepped into the breach and delivered a performance Carrick described as "immense."

Matheus Cunha's solitary goal proved enough for all three points, but the story of the night was United's resilient rearguard action. Chelsea, pushing hard for an equalizer, created significant pressure, but the Red Devils held firm to secure a crucial clean sheet and widen the gap to their rivals.

The new defensive partnership had a nervy introduction. Heaven was fortunate to escape punishment for an early challenge on Cole Palmer, while Mazraoui conceded dangerous free-kicks and was out-jumped by Wesley Fofana for a header that rattled the crossbar. However, showing tremendous character, the pair settled into the game, grew in composure, and became the bedrock of United's victory.

In his post-match interviews, Carrick was effusive in his praise. "The set-backs we have had the last few days, the centre-back partnership we had—it would be a bit of a challenge, but I felt the defence was immense in difficult circumstances," he told BBC Match of the Day. He highlighted the team's disciplined attitude and threat on the counter-attack as key factors in a memorable away win.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Carrick emphasized the significance of the moment. "Coming here is tough, we have found it hard over the years, and to have that moment in the end, they are the ones you want to remember." While refusing to get carried away with the league position, he made it clear the squad would savor a hard-fought triumph built on a foundation of defensive grit and partnership.
