Manchester United's 2-1 defeat to Leeds United was overshadowed by a controversial red card that left manager Michael Carrick fuming. Defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off in the 55th minute for pulling the hair of Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a decision Carrick labeled "shocking" and "one of the worst I've ever seen."
The incident, reviewed by VAR, resulted in a straight red card from referee Paul Tierney for violent conduct. Carrick vehemently disagreed with the call, arguing that while Martinez made contact, the action lacked aggression. "I know he touched his hair. There is a difference to really aggressively touching it," Carrick stated, expressing his frustration over what he sees as inconsistent officiating following a contentious draw with Bournemouth.
The dismissal carries significant consequences for United. Martinez, just returning from a two-month absence, now faces a three-match ban that will rule him out of crucial Premier League fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool. Carrick confirmed the club is considering an appeal against what he called "a bad decision."
Carrick's grievances extended beyond the red card. He was also incensed that Leeds's opening goal stood, accusing Calvert-Lewin of fouling young defender Leny Yoro in the build-up. "Leny Yoro gets a forearm smash in the back of the head. I don’t know how that doesn’t get overturned," he said.
For his part, Calvert-Lewin offered a pragmatic view of the hair-pull incident. "I felt my hair get pulled, told the ref, he makes the decisions. Unfortunate for him, whether he's meant it or not. I hold no grudges," the striker explained. The debate highlights the fine margins and split-second interpretations that can dramatically alter the course of a high-stakes match.
