The Miami Heat are reportedly set to officially part ways with guard Terry Rozier on Friday, a move that brings a difficult chapter for the franchise to a close. Rozier has not suited up for the team this entire season following his arrest as part of a federal investigation into an alleged illegal sports gambling operation.
While Rozier has pled not guilty and his case remains ongoing, his absence created a significant on-court void for a Heat team battling in the competitive Eastern Conference. Notably, Rozier won an arbitration ruling and will receive his full $26.6 million salary for this season.
Miami's front office had strategically kept Rozier on the roster through the NBA trade deadline, listing him as "away from the team." His expiring contract held potential value as a trade asset in a larger deal, but no such move materialized. With the team relatively healthy after the All-Star break and no urgent need for the roster spot, the Heat opted for patience before making the waiver official.
This decision comes as the Heat, currently the East's No. 10 seed, prepare for the play-in tournament. For Rozier, an unrestricted free agency awaits this summer, but his immediate basketball future remains clouded by the pending legal proceedings, likely making him untouchable for other teams in the league.
