The Miami Heat and Ja Morant trade rumors are about to heat up even more, following a pair of new reports that suggest a blockbuster deal could be on the horizon this summer.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Heat found themselves in the NBA Play-In Tournament. But unlike their previous three appearances, Miami couldn't navigate the mini-tournament, snapping their six-year playoff streak this spring. While they made a stunning run to the NBA Finals a few seasons ago, the Heat have managed just one 50-win season over the last decade. Some might argue it's time for a full-scale rebuild, but that's hardly the style of this proud franchise.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Woo, the "tank-averse" Heat are expected to "explore options to improve the team" this offseason. While waiting for next summer’s deep free-agent class is a possibility, Woo notes they could go star hunting for a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, with more suitors expected now than before February’s trade deadline, landing the Milwaukee Bucks legend might leave Miami with little left to build a title contender around.
That's where the more affordable—and intriguing—option of Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant comes into play. Woo suggests that "taking a chance on Morant might become more appealing to franchises left searching for star talent after things shake out" following the NBA Draft. The two-time All-Star's stock is at a career low due to off-court issues and persistent injuries—he played in just 20 games this season—making him a potential bargain for a team willing to take a risk.
Miami holds just under a 5% chance of landing a top-four pick in next month’s draft, meaning they'll likely select around 13th. While that could still yield a solid player, it won't be one of the elite prospects in this year's class. That reality makes a trade for a proven—if risky—talent like Morant even more appealing.
What could a deal look like? The Heat might package Andrew Wiggins' expiring contract (if he opts into the final year of his deal), or orchestrate a sign-and-trade sending Norman Powell to Memphis. Another possibility involves a future first-rounder and a couple of second-round picks heading to the Grizzlies. Either way, the speculation is only going to intensify from here.
