The streets of Long Beach witnessed a masterclass in precision and perseverance this weekend as Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian stormed to victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Piloting the No. 93 Acura ARX-06, the formidable duo of Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloly delivered a nail-biting win, marking Acura's triumphant return to the top step of the podium at this iconic event for the first time since 2019.
For Yelloly, who had praised the challenging street circuit as a personal favorite, the victory was a mission accomplished. After feeling they had unfinished business from the previous year, the team executed a flawless strategy. Their success was hard-earned, as van der Zande described a fierce final stint holding off a charging Cadillac with fading rear tires, crediting his experience in traffic management for securing the win by a mere 0.818 seconds.
The podium was a showcase of top-tier manufacturer competition. The Cadillac Whelen Engineering entry of Frederik Vesti and Jack Aitken claimed a close second, while the Porsche Penske Motorsport No. 6 Porsche 963, driven by Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, rounded out the top three in the headline GTP class.
The celebration extended beyond the prototype category. In the Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) class, Vasser Sullivan Racing secured a poignant victory with their Lexus RC F GT3, driven by Aaron Telitz and Benjamin Pedersen. The win came on a special anniversary, 30 years to the weekend after team co-owner Jimmy Vasser's own historic win at Long Beach.
With the coastal circuit now in the rearview mirror, the IMSA championship battle intensifies. The series heads north for its next showdown on May 3rd at the legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, where the quest for speed continues.
