New York's No. 2 prospect's hustle and strike-zone recognition created a memorable first outing.

New York Mets fans got a glimpse of the future on Tuesday night, and the future looks fast. Rookie A.J. Ewing, the organization's No. 2 prospect, turned his Major League debut into a showcase of patience, speed, and clutch hitting—running the Detroit Tigers ragged in a 10-2 blowout at Citi Field.

From his very first at-bat, Ewing showed he wasn't intimidated by the big stage. He worked a seven-pitch walk, setting the tone for a night defined by discipline and hustle. After a flyout in the fourth, he drew another walk in the sixth—and then the real show began. Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler, a 2025 Gold Glove winner, knew Ewing had elite speed and called for an elevated fastball to try to cut him down. But even Dingler couldn't stop the steal, as Ewing swiped second and later scored his first career run on a Bo Bichette fielder's choice.

Ewing wasn't done. In his fourth at-bat, he smashed a run-scoring triple for his first MLB hit—making him the first player in Mets history to debut with a triple. He crossed the plate again moments later. In the eighth, he capped his night with a bases-loaded walk to drive in another run, finishing his debut with three walks, a triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

How rare is a debut like that? Ewing became the first Met to reach base four times in a debut since Kazuo Matsui in 2004. The last time a player had a first-hit triple and three walks in his MLB debut? You'd have to dig deep into the record books.

Ewing, rated the No. 78 prospect in baseball, was called up to provide a spark for a slow-starting Mets squad. Mission accomplished. As Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns told MLB.com: "He's a pretty well-rounded player right now. There aren't a ton of holes in his game."

On Tuesday night, A.J. Ewing made it look easy. For Mets fans, that's exactly the kind of debut that makes you believe the best is yet to come.
