The New York Mets' bullpen shuffle continues. Ahead of their Tuesday night matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club placed right-handed pitcher Joey Gerber on the 15-day injured list due to a blister on his right finger.
To fill his spot on the active roster, the Mets have recalled right-hander Austin Warren from Triple-A Syracuse. This move underscores the constant adjustments teams make to navigate the long MLB season, especially in the high-leverage world of relief pitching.
Gerber's placement is a tough break after a promising debut. The 28-year-old, who was called up just last week, delivered a stellar performance in his lone appearance on Monday. He fired two scoreless innings against the potent Dodgers lineup, striking out five batters while allowing just two hits and a walk.
Stepping into the void is Austin Warren, who brings impressive form from the minors. In six appearances for Syracuse this season, Warren has posted a stellar 1.23 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP over 7.1 innings, successfully converting two save opportunities. He also has previous success in a Mets uniform, having pitched to a 0.96 ERA across 9.1 innings late last season.
Warren rejoins a Mets bullpen that has been a strength, currently boasting the fifth-best team ERA in baseball at 2.85. His return provides Manager Carlos Mendoza with another reliable arm to help maintain that standard while Gerber recovers.
