The New York Mets have been dealt another tough blow on the injury front, as infielder Ronny Mauricio was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a fractured left thumb. The injury occurred during Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, when Mauricio dove headfirst into first base while beating out an infield single in the seventh inning. Though he initially stayed on the bag, he was pulled from the game before the bottom of the frame.

Manager Carlos Mendoza provided a sobering update on the 25-year-old's prognosis, noting that the timeline could stretch between six to eight weeks. "He's going to get a CT scan (Monday), but regardless of the severity, what they're saying is it is going to be six to eight weeks," Mendoza explained before Sunday's series finale. Mauricio had been finding his rhythm at the plate, batting .219 across 10 games this season and launching his first home run of the year in Friday's series opener.

To fill the gap, the Mets selected the contract of infielder Vidal Brujan from Triple-A Syracuse. Brujan, 28, was acquired from the Minnesota Twins in January and is set to make his Mets debut. A career .199 hitter with five home runs and 48 RBIs across 261 games with four different clubs—including his first three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2021-23)—Brujan brings versatility and switch-hitting ability to the lineup.

Mendoza indicated that Brujan and right-handed hitter Bo Bichette will share time at shortstop moving forward. "It will be matchup based when I want to get lefties in there and when I want righties," Mendoza said. "But when it's a tough matchup right-on-right, I also want to get in some of the lefties (including) Brujan."

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Brujan, infielder Eric Wagaman was designated for assignment. The Mets are navigating a growing list of position player injuries, including first baseman Jorge Polanco (wrist), shortstop Francisco Lindor (calf), and outfielder Luis Robert Jr. (back). "I don't think anybody anticipated anything like that," Mendoza admitted, as the team looks to stay afloat in a competitive division.
