The New York Mets designated Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment recently, and now he's chosen free agency.

The New York Mets have been busy shuffling their roster, and veteran right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. is the latest player caught in the whirlwind. After being designated for assignment last Thursday, Edwards has opted for free agency—but don't count him out just yet. According to reports from MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, he could be back in a Mets uniform within days.

Edwards' time on the active roster was brief but effective. In two appearances spanning six innings, he struck out 11 batters while allowing just one run on three hits. His 17.2 percent swinging-strike rate was particularly eye-catching, though four walks raised some eyebrows. That six-inning stint matched his entire MLB workload from last season, when he appeared in four games between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels.

The 33-year-old has been something of a journeyman in recent years, spending most of his time on minor league deals since his last extended big league opportunity with the Washington Nationals in 2022. The Mets originally signed him to a minor league contract, and he even started four games for Triple-A Syracuse before his promotion. When the Mets needed rotation help last week, Edwards stepped in as an opener—and performed well enough to leave a lasting impression.

The timing couldn't be more critical for New York. The back end of their rotation has been a mess: Sean Manaea is working out of the bullpen, Kodai Senga is on the injured list, and David Peterson struggled before finally notching his first win of the season against the Colorado Rockies. The Mets have already had to use two openers to patch things together.

With that kind of instability, bringing Edwards back on a new minor league deal seems like a logical move. Whether it happens in the coming days will depend on how the Mets' pitching puzzle continues to evolve—but if his recent performance is any indication, Edwards has made a strong case for another chance.
