The New York Mets have officially called up top prospect A.J. Ewing, making the move official Tuesday afternoon. In a corresponding roster shuffle, infielder Andy Ibáñez has been designated for assignment.
Ewing, who enters the big leagues ranked No. 2 on MLB Pipeline’s list of top Mets prospects and No. 6 on Amazin’ Avenue’s preseason rankings, has been on fire since his promotion to Triple-A Syracuse on April 27. In just 12 games, the 21-year-old posted an impressive .827 OPS, continuing a trend of thriving at every level of the minors. Drafted by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft—a pick acquired as compensation for Jacob deGrom’s free-agent departure—Ewing has proven to be a savvy addition to the organization.
Making his MLB debut Tuesday night against Jack Flaherty and the Detroit Tigers, Ewing will bat eighth and patrol center field. Adding a touch of history to his debut, he’ll wear jersey No. 9, making him the first Met not named Brandon Nimmo to don that number since Kirk Nieuwenhuis in 2015. Ewing’s arrival isn’t the only lineup shakeup: Carson Benge will lead off for the first time since April 19, while Juan Soto slides into the third spot for the first time this season.
Ibáñez’s stint with the Mets was brief and rocky. Claimed off waivers on April 30, he went 0-for-6 with a pair of sacrifice flies in just three games. His final appearance came Sunday, starting at third base in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks, where two costly throwing errors drew sharp criticism from manager Carlos Mendoza after the game. For Mets fans, this roster move signals a fresh injection of youthful energy as the team looks to build momentum.
