Will the Mets do this?

The New York Mets have made headlines for their aggressive spending in recent years, but one of their biggest contracts is now being called into question. Bo Bichette, once seen as a cornerstone piece, has become a subject of trade speculation—though moving him may be tougher than expected.

Bichette signed a three-year deal with the Mets that includes player opt-outs after 2027 and 2028. While the contract gave him financial security, it also handed him significant control over his future. That decision is now being viewed as a major misstep, with some analysts labeling it one of the worst contracts in baseball.

Zachary Rotman of FanSided recently wrote, "The New York Mets are a mess, and Bo Bichette is one of the biggest reasons why. The Mets would presumably love to trade him to get some return and avoid the risk of him opting into the remaining two years and $84 million. But I'm not sure how realistic that is."

At just 28 years old, Bichette has already led the league in hits twice. That kind of track record usually makes a player highly tradeable. However, his recent offensive struggles and well-documented defensive issues have cooled interest around the league. Add in the player options that allow him to dictate his future, and potential suitors have little incentive to take a gamble.

For the Mets, the path forward is unclear. Trading Bichette would require finding a team willing to bet on a rebound, all while navigating the complexities of his contract. For now, the shortstop remains in Queens—and the Mets may have no choice but to hope he rediscovers his All-Star form.
