The pressure is mounting in Queens. If the New York Mets fail to secure a playoff spot this season, president of baseball operations David Stearns could be shown the door. That’s the word from insiders, and it’s a scenario that feels increasingly real as the team struggles to meet sky-high expectations.
Let’s be honest: the Mets have not looked like the contender fans hoped for during the first few months of the season. When a team underperforms this badly, heads usually roll—and the biggest target might be manager Carlos Mendoza. But whispers are growing louder that Stearns, the architect of the roster, is also on the hot seat.
SNY’s Chelsea Janes recently reported that while Stearns likely won’t be fired midseason, owner Steve Cohen will give him a chance to fix things before the trade deadline. “All of which is to say, I think Cohen gives Stearns a chance to fix this between now and the end of the season. If they miss the playoffs, I do not think he will get more chances beyond that,” Janes wrote.
This makes sense. Stearns has a track record of success elsewhere, and it’s easy to imagine him thriving with a fresh start. But in New York, results matter—and right now, the results aren’t there. If the Mets can’t turn things around, don’t be surprised if the front office undergoes a major shakeup this winter.
