Tuesday night in the Mets minor league system was a mixed bag, but one moment of late-inning heroics stood out above the rest. A walk-off single from A.J. Ewing gave Syracuse the sole win of the evening, proving that sometimes, one big swing is all it takes.
In Triple-A action, the Syracuse Mets (now 20-15) pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory over Rochester. Playing as the Salt Potatoes, Syracuse found themselves trailing twice before clawing back. Ji Hwan Bae evened the score with an RBI in the fourth, and Christian Arroyo followed suit in the sixth. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, A.J. Ewing delivered the decisive blow—a single to right field that sent the home crowd home happy. The bullpen deserves plenty of credit, too: Ryan Lambert, Jonathan Pintaro, and Dylan Ross combined for three scoreless innings, striking out six while walking none. Pintaro was especially sharp, tossing a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Double-A Binghamton had a tougher go of it. The Rumble Ponies jumped ahead with a run in the first, but the Yard Goats answered in the third and took the lead in the fifth. Reliever Kevin Gowdy struggled in the seventh, allowing three runs (two earned) in just one-third of an inning. Binghamton fought back with runs in the seventh and eighth, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
The news wasn't much better in High-A Brooklyn. Starting pitcher Jonathan Jimenez was roughed up early, surrendering five runs in the first inning alone. The Cyclones showed fight with two runs in the top of the second, but the bats went silent from there. Reliever Garrett Stratton also had a rough outing, giving up three runs in the seventh as Bowling Green pulled away.
Down in Single-A St. Lucie, the story was similar. The Mets opened the scoring with a run in the first, but the offense stalled after that. It was a night of missed opportunities, but with young prospects, every game is a learning experience.
