It was a marathon day in the Mets' minor league system, and no game tested endurance quite like Syracuse's 13-inning thriller. The Triple-A Mets edged out Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7-4 in a game that reminded us why extra innings can still be a treat—even with the ghost runner rule speeding things up.
Syracuse starter Jack Wenninger was dealing, tossing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and lowering his ERA to a microscopic 1.08. But after he exited, the RailRiders grabbed the lead, and the Mets entered the ninth inning trailing 4-2. That's when the comeback magic kicked in: Ryan Clifford delivered an RBI double, and Yonny Hernandez followed with an RBI single to tie the game and send it to extras.
With the ghost runner starting at second in extra frames, we don't often see games stretch too far past the tenth. But this one had other plans. In the top of the 13th, Nick Morabito laid down a sacrifice bunt to move ghost runner Matt Rudick to third. A fielding miscue by old friend Ali Sanchez—normally a sure-handed catcher, but playing first base after pinch-hitting—opened the door for Christian Arroyo, who laced a two-run single into left to give Syracuse the lead. Mike Baumann sealed the win with a clean 1-2-3 inning for the save.
Standout performers included catcher Hayden Senger, who crushed his sixth homer of the year, and the bullpen trio of Anderson Severino (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, W), Alex Carrillo (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R), and Baumann, who combined to keep the RailRiders off the board in the late innings.
In Double-A, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped their fifth straight game, falling to the Somerset Patriots in the opener of the Subway Series. Meanwhile, the organization announced that outfielder Matt Rudick has been promoted to Syracuse from Binghamton, adding depth to the Triple-A outfield.
Whether you're tracking prospects for fantasy or just love seeing the next wave of Mets talent develop, days like this remind us that the future is bright—and sometimes, it takes a little extra time to shine.
