The New York Mets are getting a much-needed jolt of energy, and his name is A.J. Ewing. The 21-year-old outfielder received the call every kid dreams of on Monday night, when Syracuse Mets manager Dick Scott knocked on his door with news that would change his life: he was headed to the big leagues.
"It's awesome, man," Ewing said Tuesday at Citi Field, where he was penciled into the starting lineup batting eighth and playing center field against the Detroit Tigers. "Just a dream come true, and I'm really excited."
Ewing's rapid rise has been nothing short of impressive. After starting the season in Double-A Binghamton, he forced the organization's hand with dominant play, earning a promotion to Triple-A after just 18 games. In only 13 games with Syracuse, he continued to rake, but even he admits the call-up came sooner than expected.
"I was just focused on being the best player I could and dominating the level I'm at," Ewing said. "The fact that it happened, I'm just excited to be here and ready to go."
And dominate he did. Across both minor-league levels this season, Ewing posted a blistering .339 batting average with a .447 on-base percentage and a staggering .961 OPS. He mashed nine doubles, two triples, and two home runs while driving in 11 runs. But it's not just his bat that has scouts buzzing—Ewing's elite speed (17 stolen bases) and game-changing defense in the outfield make him a complete weapon.
For a Mets team that has been searching for a spark, Ewing's arrival couldn't come at a better time. The rookie isn't letting the moment overwhelm him, though. With the confidence of a seasoned veteran, he's ready to bring his game to the highest level.
"I'm confident in my ability, and I'm just going to play the same game that I've been playing," Ewing said. "Just go and do what I do. I feel comfortable and ready to compete."
