Fresh off his promotion from Double-A to Triple-A at the end of April, Mets prospect A.J. Ewing is turning heads—and climbing prospect rankings fast. The 21-year-old jumped from No. 83 in January to No. 37 in Baseball America's latest Top 100 list released May 6. It's a meteoric rise that would make any player dizzy, but Ewing is keeping his feet on the ground.
"It's impossible not to find out about that and see that stuff," Ewing told NJ.com's Max Goodman on "Speaking of the Mets." "At the end of the day, no matter where you're at, you just got to show up and play the same game that you've been playing all these years."
That grounded approach is paying off. Ewing absolutely tore the cover off the ball in Binghamton, hitting .349 over 18 games in 2026, and he hasn't missed a beat in Syracuse. Through eight games at Triple-A, he's hitting a scorching .393—a testament to a confidence that fuels his game.
"Just staying with myself and having confidence that what I'm doing in the box is going to work," Ewing said. "Always believing in yourself. That confidence in the box and confidence in the field goes a lot more of a way than people might think."
One of Ewing's most exciting traits? His wheels. Last season, across 124 minor league games at three levels, he swiped an incredible 70 bases while getting caught just 11 times. He's already stolen 16 bases in 24 games this year, and he knows exactly how valuable that speed is.
"I love it—there's a lot of value in that," Ewing said. "It sets the team up to get more runs and sets us up for a lot of success."
For Mets fans just getting to know him, Ewing points to his plate discipline. In 28 Triple-A at-bats, he's struck out just three times, showing a knack for spraying the ball to all fields. "I think I'm a complete player," he added, and with his blend of speed, contact, and confidence, it's easy to see why the prospect world is taking notice.
