Merrill Kelly put on a masterclass on the mound Friday night, firing his first career complete game as the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Colorado Rockies 9-1. The veteran right-hander was in complete control from start to finish, allowing just four hits while striking out three and walking none. At 37 years old, Kelly needed only 100 pitches—73 of them strikes—to become just the fourth pitcher in the majors this season to go the distance.
The Diamondbacks jumped all over Rockies starter Kyle Freeland early, exploding for six runs in the first inning. Ildemaro Vargas was the catalyst, going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Gabriel Moreno drove in three runs and Ryan Waldschmidt added two more. The lineup was relentless, with Moreno and Corbin Carroll each collecting two hits, and Nolan Arenado showing incredible plate discipline by going 1-for-1 with an RBI double and four walks.
Colorado’s only bright spot came in the first inning when Hunter Goodman launched his 11th home run of the season, but that was all the offense they could muster against Kelly. Freeland (1-5) struggled mightily, surrendering seven runs on eight hits over just 3 2/3 innings, walking four in the process.
The win improves Arizona to 21-22 as they begin a favorable stretch of 13 games against just the Rockies and San Francisco Giants. The Diamondbacks will look to keep the momentum going Saturday when left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (4-0, 2.25 ERA) takes the mound against Colorado’s Tomoyuki Sugano (3-3, 4.07).
