The Mercy Academy Jaguars will have a new leader on the sideline next season. Head basketball coach Nick Cann announced his resignation Tuesday, concluding a successful five-year tenure with the program.
Cann, who is pursuing an opportunity to coach at the collegiate level, leaves behind a significant legacy. In a heartfelt social media post, he called the decision one of the hardest, stating, "From the moment I got here, Mercy always felt like home."
His results speak volumes. Cann compiled a 99-69 record, cementing the Jaguars as a Sixth Region powerhouse. He guided the team to regional championships in 2023 and 2025, with the 2022-23 squad making a memorable run to the KHSAA Sweet 16 quarterfinals. Last season, the team finished 20-14, reaching the regional semifinals.
A University of Kentucky alumnus with extensive coaching experience in Kentucky high school basketball, Cann expressed deep gratitude for his time at Mercy. He praised the student-athletes, parents, and administration, calling his five years "the most rewarding of my professional life."
As the Jaguars begin their search for a new coach, the foundation for success remains strong. Cann's departure marks the end of an impactful chapter, one defined by competitive excellence and a true love for the game—a spirit every athlete and fan can appreciate.
