Northwestern men's golf kicked off its postseason campaign with a solid top-10 finish, tying for ninth place at the Big Ten Championships. Competing against a stacked 18-team field that included six top-50 programs, the Wildcats showed resilience and flashes of brilliance across three rounds at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.
The tournament opened with promise as Jeremy Chen set the tone with a 3-under performance, highlighted by four birdies—including back-to-back on holes 17 and 18. Ethan Tseng also contributed a steady 1-over round with three birdies, helping the team sit in fifth place at 5-over after the first 18 holes.
Day two proved more challenging, with the Wildcats shooting 12-over as a team. Rowan Sullivan provided a bright spot, carding an even-par 70 with seven birdies—four of which came over his final seven holes. Despite his efforts, Northwestern slipped to 12th place, setting up a crucial final round.
The Wildcats saved their best for last, delivering a 1-over team score on the final day to climb back into a tie for ninth. Senior Daniel Svärd stole the show with a spectacular 5-under 65—the lowest round of both the day and the entire tournament. His six-birdie, one-bogey performance was a masterclass in precision and composure.
Northwestern also dominated the par-5 18th hole, with four players making birdies and Sullivan adding an eagle. Overall, the Wildcats ranked fifth in par-5 scoring (4.82 average) and recorded 45 birdies—the sixth-most in the field.
The Pumpkin Ridge course lived up to its reputation for difficulty, averaging 72.49 despite minimal wind. Only three holes played under par for the week, with the par-5 18th being the easiest (4.80 average) and the par-3 fifth the toughest (3.42 average).
Svärd, a two-time Big Ten individual champion, delivered Northwestern's top individual performance. After opening with back-to-back 73s, he closed with his tournament-low 65, making 10 birdies overall (tied for 24th-most in the field) to finish in 14th place. Chen, Tseng, and Sullivan each turned in steady contributions, showcasing the depth that will serve the Wildcats well as they look ahead to the next challenge.
