The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball roster is taking shape for the 2024-25 season, and a significant change has been confirmed in the frontcourt. Starting center Robert Vaihola will enter the NCAA transfer portal, a source told the Pioneer Press on Friday, bringing clarity to his future after a season cut short by injury.
Vaihola's departure, following the mid-season exit of backup Nehemiah Turner, leaves a glaring hole at the center position for head coach Ben Johnson. The 6-foot-9 big man, who transferred from San Jose State last offseason, showed promise in his brief five-game stint, averaging 7.6 rebounds and 5.0 points before a knee injury ended his year. His move underscores the critical importance of the transfer portal in modern college basketball team building.
While Vaihola's path is clear, the Gophers remain in a waiting game regarding point guard Chansey Willis. Willis, a Western Michigan transfer whose season also ended in November due to a knee injury, was not included in a late-March announcement of returning players by the collective Dinkytown Athletes. His decision on whether to enter the portal is still pending.
The backcourt uncertainty extends beyond Willis. Guards Kai Shinholster and Chance Stephens have yet to publicly announce their plans for next season. With the transfer portal open until April 21, Minnesota's roster is very much in flux. The Gophers currently have seven players committed for next season with eight scholarships available, setting the stage for a pivotal few weeks of portal recruitment to fill key roles, especially in the paint.
